HIKING THROUGH THE MASCA GORGE
The Masca gorge is one of the greatest attractions in Tenerife. A natural area nestled in the Teno massif that allows us to explore one of the most ancient part of the island while enjoying one of the most spectacular hiking trails that can be done on site.
The hiking route through the Masca gorge begins with a short walk through the traditional Masca community that lays under the shadow of the Roque de Catana. The small Masca, declared an asset of Cultural Interest under the Historic Complex category, barely has 100 inhabitants and treasures a sample of the ethnography that this place hides where, in addition, we find a beautiful representation of traditional Canarian architecture.
Book with us and enjoy a day of hiking through the Masca gorge accompanied by our guide down to the beautiful beach of Masca, a wild place located between the famous cliffs of Los Gigantes where you will rest before starting your way back up the ravine. From sea level we will ascend, step by step, to 600 meters of altitude where the hamlet is located.
This hiking activity through the Masca gorge begins in the square of Masca at 10:00 a.m. The descent route will take us about 3 hours while for the ascent we will need about 3.5 hours.
The Masca beach pier is not in operation, so departure by boat or kayak is not possible (updated info).
In the event that the closure of the Masca gorge is ordered by local authorities for reasons beyond our control (adverse weather or any other), an alternative excursion will be made in the Teno Rural Park and the amount paid will not be refunded.
On the day of the hiking activity through the Masca gorge, it is necessary to bring your ID or Passport, mountain clothes and shoes with good tread on the sole (this is MANDATORY), water (at least 2 liters per person) and food.
In the event of not wearing suitable footwear, the Visitor Center staff will not allow access to the gorge and the amount paid will not be refunded (sport or running shoes are NOT accepted only mountain shoes).
This hiking activity through the Masca ravine is a high difficulty activity, so it is recommended only for people who are comfortable with hiking for the determined number of hours. Please take this in to consideration.
The hiking route through the Masca gorge is not recommended for people with cardio-respiratory problems, children under 12 years of age and pregnant women.
Courtesy waiting time is 10 minutes.
In case of not complying with any of the necessary conditions, regulations, equipment and documentation, both our staff and the person in charge of controlling the path will deny access and no type of reimbursement will be made.
The estimated approximate time to carry out the activity of hiking through the Masca gorge is 6.5 hours. for people with experience in hiking and in good physical condition. If someone takes much longer and misses the public transport back to the point of origin, he/she must bear the cost of the private transport service (taxi).
During the descent of the path to Masca beach, if the guide considers that any user presents some type of difficulty to complete the hike, he/she may order him/she, for safety reasons, to return to the starting point. In this case, the guide will make sure that the physical conditions of the user are sufficient to guarantee the return and that they have water and food. This measure will also be coordinated by informing the control staff of the gorge, which is located at various points in the ravine.
Prices set for a minimum 5 people (adults). In the event that the minimum enrollment is not reached, we will notify you at least one day in advance. In that case you can choose another date, another activity, request a refund or carry out the activity assuming its minimum cost (€150).
Car parking in Masca are regulated with a maximum of 2 hours (blue zone). For this reason, it is recommended to access by public transport so as not to lose the reservation and the amount paid. If you arrive from the north of the island (Buenavista del Norte bus station) you should take TITSA line 355 at 9:35 am.
If you access from the south (public square of Santiago del Teide) you must take the same line at 9:15 am. Both services have a very limited capacity so you must be at those stops well in advance. The payment of the ticket in Titsa can be made in cash directly to the driver. More info at titsa.com
